It is a gratifying to hear a reasoned non-hysterical voice discussing the issues of mental health and firearms. The Virginia Tech shootings were horrific and probably preventable. Unfortunately, the State of Virginia has one of the worst records of treatment enforcement in the nation.

I recommend that you investigate the Treatment Advocacy Center (TAC) by visiting their website at www.treatmentadvocacycenter.org. This is the foremost organization advocating the enforced treatment of the dangerously mentally ill.

Misguided civil rights activists have created a situation in this country that allows these unfortunates to “die with their rights on” rather than receive the treatment they are unaware they need. The very nature of their illness renders them incapable of recognizing that they are a danger to themselves and others.

The “trigger” that would prevent dangerously mentally ill persons from legally obtaining a weapon is a difficult line to legislate. However, an involuntary commitment order, whether for in-patient or out-patient treatment, is at least a starting point. These orders are generally difficult to obtain and are usually only issued when a person demonstrates they are a grave danger to themselves or others. This, by definition, would not include persons suffering from post-traumatic stress, depression, etc unless they were delusional, paranoid, and acting out dangerously.

Thank you for bringing this issue out in the open. As you said, gun rights advocates can not afford to take an absolutist stance on this issue that would not serve anyone.
